The Great Mango Book is the latest in a series of handy
dandy single subject books from Ten Speed Press. Written by
renowned Floridian chef and self-confessed mango junky Allen
Susser, this little gem is a power packed read.
The book is divided in to three sections. The first discusses
the history of the fruit, is origins, various types of mango
and how it is shaped it way in to the culture of many nations.
Many tit bits of information are scattered though out this
first section - for example did you know that the mango, pistachio
nut and poison ivy are all related? A perfect morsel of information
to stun your coworkers with!
Mango varieties are the next topic of discussion. Over fifty
types are featured each with its own description, tasting
notes and clean crisp photograph.
The final chapter showcases chef Allen’s recipes, both savory
and sweet, with a few cheeky bevies thrown in for good measure.
The aromatic Shrimp and Mango Curry worked really well. This
dish is made with a green mango and laced with Indian spices.
The Mango Split with Rum-Carmel Sauce is a “no brainer”. In
true Floridian style Allen finishes the dish with a squirt
of lime to cut the sweetness.
To summarize, there is a lot of information in this little
book, it is well written with good recipes. At only $12 (£11)
it won’t break the bank. Check out a sample recipe - Shrimp
& Mango Curry.
