Seasonal Spanish Food is a charming debut by London based Chef Jose Pizarro. If you are looking for a cookbook that is pleasing to the eye, palate, and soul, look no further than this heartfelt read. Mr. Pizarro takes the reader on a tasteful trip through the seasons. Starting with spring, we are introduced to dishes that represent the season's fresh crisp flavors. One notable stand out is Pizarro's Pea Soup with Serrano Ham. As with all of his recipes throughout the book this one is accompanied with a personal description, which adds more depth and feeling to the recipe than a simple instruction. In doing this, Pizarro creates a sense of intimacy while reading, that is extremely difficult to find in a cookbook. Accompanied by beautiful photographs and from-the-heart stories, we are taken on a journey through the rest of the seasons, taking rest stops at some of Pizarro's favorite times of the year that call for celebration. Be it mushroom hunting in autumn, or his childhood memories of La Matanza (pig slaughter) during winter, Pizarro paints a glorious picture of himself and where his food comes from (geographically and mentally) through personal stories. Towards the end of the book, we are able wind down the trip with an attentive and very tasteful section on wine and other Spanish spirits. Seriously, if you want to know what it is like to read a cookbook where it's apparent that the author really and truly poured his heart and soul into every page and recipe, pick up Seasonal Spanish Food. You will not regret it.
